Throne of Glass (ToG #1)
by Sarah J. Maas
5 out of 5 stars
After a 15-day hiatus, we are hopefully back to our regularly scheduled book reviews. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago, my neck started hurting pretty badly, and it became apparent that it had been caused by reading "too much" - whatever that means... So, I took a break, and with the help of "lazy glasses," I could start reading again, sans pain. (Thank you, Rachel, for the suggestion).
I became a fan of SJM's writing after reading A Court of Thorns and Roses and devouring the published works of that series last October. Shortly after that, I purchased the entirety of ToG and Crescent City without question. The same coworker who turned me onto ACOTAR suggested I read this series next before moving to CC.
We are introduced to Celaena Sardothien, a prisoner in the Endovier Salt Mines. She is being escorted by none other than the Captain of the Royal Guard to be the Crown Prince's champion for the King's competition. If Celaena manages to defeat 23 different champions from various backgrounds, she will be the King's Champion for 4 years and then be granted her freedom.
Celaena accepts the terms, expecting she will win the competition with ease. What she doesn't expect are the friends and relationships she gains along the way.
Once they arrive at the castle, it is apparent early on that something evil is among them. Competitors are being found, having met gruesome deaths days before each test. Celaena must defeat the other champions to win her freedom, but she must find and eliminate this enemy to survive.
I don't want to give away any spoilers, this story was fantastic, and I love the dynamic characters. I am thankful I already have the entire series, so I don't have to wait to pick up the next book. For those who love adventure, fantasy, and just a hint of romance (no spice) - this series is for you!
Stay tuned for my reviews of the rest of the series.... :)
