Crown of Midnight (ToG #2)
by Sarah J. Maas
5 out of 5 stars
*This review contains some very slight spoilers for book #1 of the series. If you plan to read this series, which I definitely recommend that you do, maybe wait until my series wrap up in a few weeks to read my thoughts on the series as a whole instead of each individual book *
I am happy to say that I am super invested in this series -- especially after finishing Crown of Midnight this week...
Book two of the series continues when assassin Celaena Sardothien, a former prisoner in the Endovier Salt Mines, becomes the King's Champion after defeating 23 other competitors. She has signed a contract to be the King's Champion (which is just a nice way of saying she is his hired killer) for 4 years before she is awarded her freedom.
Her true loyalties, though, are not to the evil King that she swore an oath to obey and protect; but to instead uncover the dark truth behind his overwhelming power and military success.
Celaena's relationships with her friends continue to develop, but when tragedy strikes, she is left unsure of who she can trust.
Holy smokes... the twist at the very end... I had briefly thought about that as a possibility but wasn't super confident in it until it was clear... I am a bit sad that she is heading off on her own voyage away from Chaol and Dorian, but we will see what happens. As a survivor of Maas destruction via ACOTAR, I know better than to ship anyone early on in a series...
On to 'Heir of Fire' :)
