Tea and Books: Perfect Pairings for Cozy Reading

by Jessica Jones

As book lovers, we all have our favorite ways to enjoy our reading time. Some of us like to snuggle up in a cozy blanket with a cup of hot tea, while others may prefer to sit outside in the sunshine with an iced tea in hand.

I was talking to my husband this week about the various options we have in our teabox, as I have become a bit of a collector.

He asked me to help him decide which tea to try next, so I described each of the different blends. Once he settled on a peach and honey-flavored white tea, I explained that I was drinking green tea with honey because it went with the book I was reading. From there, I had the idea to write about the perfect pairings of tea and books to enhance the reading experience.

First, let's start with the classics. For those who love Jane Austen or the Bronte sisters, a cup of Earl Grey is a perfect complement to your reading. The floral aroma and delicate taste of the tea are a perfect match for the romantic and elegant prose of these authors. On the other hand, if you prefer something more substantial, a robust black tea like Darjeeling is an excellent choice for the heavier themes of classic literature.

If you're a fan of contemporary fiction, you might want to try pairing your book with a fruity-flavored tea like peach or raspberry. The bright and refreshing flavors perfectly match the lighter, more whimsical tones of modern novels. You might also try a light green tea or even a refreshing herbal tea like peppermint to cleanse your palate and keep you energized through long reading sessions.

For those who love mysteries or suspenseful thrillers, a strong black tea like English Breakfast is a great choice. The bold, robust flavors will keep you on your toes and focused on the twists and turns of the plot. You might also try a spicy chai for added depth and complexity.

When pairing tea with a fantasy novel, it's all about creating the perfect ambiance to transport you to another world. A cup of Earl Grey or English Breakfast tea can add a touch of familiarity to classic tales, while a spiced chai or ginger tea can bring a bit of exoticism to stories set in far-off lands. For those seeking a truly magical experience, floral and fruity teas like rose or jasmine can add a touch of enchantment to mythical tales.

When reading contemporary romance, I recommend sipping on a light and floral tea like jasmine green tea or an oolong tea with notes of honeysuckle. With stories of love, heartbreak, and self-discovery, contemporary romance books are perfect for enjoying a delicate tea that won't overpower the nuances of the characters and plot. The floral aroma and refreshing taste of jasmine green tea can add a touch of whimsy and romance to your reading experience, while the complex flavors of an oolong tea can mirror the depth and complexity of contemporary romance characters.

No matter what genre of book you prefer, tea can be the perfect accompaniment to enhance your reading experience. So the next time you settle in with your favorite book, make sure you have a cup of tea by your side for the ultimate cozy and relaxing reading session.
