The Assassin's Blade (ToG # 0.1 - 0.5)
by Sarah J. Maas
5 out of 5 stars
I almost skipped this and left it for the end of the series because I was so invested in the story after finishing Heir of Fire, and I just wanted to keep going. I had decided to read the series in non-chronological order (ToG, CoM, HoF, TAB, QoS, ToD, EoS, KoA) based on a conversation with someone who had previously read the series, and after doing a bit of research on the different preferred orders. I still may do a tandem read with Tower of Dawn and Empire of Storms -- but I have not decided yet.
The Assassin's Blade is a collection of five novellas that take place before the events of the Throne of Glass series. The novellas follow the story of Celaena Sardothien, an assassin with a dark past and a fierce spirit. The stories are gripping, action-packed, and emotionally charged, making this prequel a must-read.
What makes The Assassin's Blade so compelling is the way that Maas weaves together multiple storylines into a cohesive narrative. Each novella explores a different aspect of Celaena's past, revealing new bits of information and adding depth to her character. The pacing is perfect, with each story building on the last, culminating in a thrilling and emotional finale.
Maas's ability to create complex and compelling characters is one of the strengths of this book and the entire series so far. Celaena is a fierce and flawed protagonist who is both relatable and admirable.
Overall, The Assassin's Blade is a fantastic addition to the series. It's a must-read for readers who want to learn more about the motivations from Celaena's past, but it's also a great starting point for readers new to the series. I can see benefits to reading the series in timeline order, but I am glad I waited to read this one after Heir of Fire.
On to Queen of Shadows, next! :)
