The Valentine's Hate
by Sidney Halston
4 out of 5 stars
I picked this one up at my local bookstore over the weekend. I was heading there to pick up Tessa Bailey's new book that I had preordered, but I tend to browse even when it's just a 'pick-up day,' and this book caught my eye amongst a few other titles in the Valentine's Day display.
I generally don't read holiday-themed romances, but after reading the blurb and seeing that the MMC was a writer - I had to indulge. 'The Valentine's Hate' has my favorite tropes, enemies-to-lovers, fauxmance, and a bit of forced proximity when they end up at the same resort in Cancun.
Lizzie and Brian are old enemies with a grudge that dates back to second grade. Having been neighbors for nearly all of their school years, they often were thrown into situations together that only fueled their animosity for one another.
Lizzie hadn't thought about Brian Anderson in years until she found herself in the middle seat next to him on a flight to Cancun. Things get more interesting when they find themselves at the same resort, Brian for his book tour and Lizzie for her best friend's wedding.
Then they find themselves in a quid-pro-quo situation, Brian needs someone to ride shotgun for his events to keep a sleazy actress off his back and to keep him from saying the wrong thing, and Lizzie needs a room when hers is canceled due to flood damage.
I love a good enemies-to-lovers when the banter fuels the spice, and the fauxmance makes them second guess every move. I enjoy a dual POV, but my only critique is that sometimes it was confusing when the POV would switch mid-chapter.
This is the book for you if you are looking for a light, fluffy rom-com (especially for Valentine's Day).
