The Willow Rise Six
by Alan Leuthe
5 out of 5 stars
Author Alan Leuthe reached out to me through my bookstagram to introduce me to his book "The Willow Rise Six." This book was published last year but had not come across my radar, although it had won multiple national writing contests.
I let Mr. Leuthe know that I would give this one a read and review - this was the first western I have read in a long time - if ever (although I enjoy watching westerns with my husband and do so nearly every day).
I was instantly hooked by this story of a group from Willow Rise who set out to complete a job that Mr. Bill Daniels was hired to do. As the story unravels, we learn that these folks were handpicked for this heist because of their unique and unfortunate histories that Bill somehow knows about, thanks to his right-hand man, Levi.
We don't know much about Levi's history - other than his love for gambling, but he clarifies that he works with and not for Bill Daniels every chance he has.
I liked all the characters and found that they all had great depth. In addition, each character had an individual storyline that shed light on their history and past troubles that led them to Willow Rise and onto Bill Daniels' current crew.
This was a page-turner - a sense of mystery makes you want to know more and figure out how things are connected. But, speaking more to that point, I felt the author did a great job making connections without feeling forced or too convenient. I appreciated that - because I often find that things get tied up too quickly in books (even by well-known authors) where things just don't fit or make sense - like everything magically comes together instead of strategically.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys westerns or books with mystery and heist. This book was very well written, and I could tell that the author enjoyed writing this - you could see that in the development of the characters and the care and detail throughout the story.
This book deserves more attention than it has gotten, and I am so glad the author reached out to me! I am a big supporter of indie authors and bookstores, so share this review, and check out the book! It is currently available in paperback, and on Kindle Unlimited.
