Summers End: A Shady Hollow Mystery
by Juneau Black
5 out of 5 stars
"Summer's End" is a delightful addition to the Shady Hollow Mystery series, and it certainly deserves all five stars! This fifth installment takes our favorite foxy sleuth, Vera Vixen, out of Shady Hollow and into the intriguing world of Summers End, an archaeological site with ancient tombs and mysterious artifacts.
Juneau Black, the talented duo behind the series, has once again crafted a story that's both charming and compelling. The setting of Summers End adds a fresh twist to the series, with its dark academia vibes and rich historical lore. The authors brilliantly weave a tale that keeps readers guessing until the very end.
Vera Vixen shines as the intrepid reporter turned amateur detective. Her curiosity and sharp instincts make her a captivating protagonist. Alongside her loyal friend, Lenore the raven, Vera navigates the treacherous waters of academia and unearths secrets that some would prefer stay buried.
The introduction of new characters and a different setting could have been risky, but it pays off beautifully. The vibrant new cast and the enchanting location enrich the story, adding depth and variety. Yet, fans of the series will still find comfort in the familiar cozy mystery formula that makes Shady Hollow so beloved.
The mystery itself is well-crafted, with red herrings and surprising twists that keep the reader engaged. The stakes feel higher in this installment, and the plot is intricately designed, making it a joy to piece together.
One of the most delightful aspects of this book is how it balances the whimsy of anthropomorphic characters with the seriousness of a murder investigation. The woodland creatures, from Vera to the grumpy professors and quirky townsfolk, are endearing and memorable.
"Summer's End" is a perfect read for cozy mystery lovers and fans of clever, character-driven stories. It's a testament to Juneau Black's storytelling prowess that this series continues to grow and evolve while maintaining its unique charm. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a delightful escape into the world of Shady Hollow.
