Mirror Lake: A Shady Hollow Mystery

5 out of 5 stars

I was introduced to the Shady Hollow series when my husband went to our local indie bookstore and asked for some recommendations for some books to purchase as part of my Christmas gift.

It meant a lot to me that he would take the time to ask for recommendations and read the back cover blurbs. He knows that the ladies who own Rudolph Girls Books know a bit about my tastes, so he asked them for their input.

I was so excited when I opened the first book of the series, Shady Hollow (review here), for Christmas. I had not heard of this series before - but the fact that the characters were all woodland creatures was very intriguing to me.

Set in the enchanting and somewhat quirky town of Shady Hollow, "Mirror Lake" introduces us to a perplexing mystery: the murder of a rat who paradoxically seems to be still alive. This intriguing premise immediately captivated my interest, blending classic mystery elements with a touch of the surreal.

Juneau Black's storytelling is both fluid and vivid, creating a narrative that is as engaging as it is rich in detail. The anthropomorphic characters of Shady Hollow bring a whimsical yet mature charm to the story, striking a delightful balance between nostalgic fairy tale elements and sophisticated storytelling.

The subplot involving a tense election in Shady Hollow adds another layer to the novel, providing an interesting backdrop to the central mystery. It's a reflection on community dynamics, power struggles, and the responsibilities that come with leadership, themes that resonate deeply in today's world.

Vera Vixen, the protagonist, is particularly noteworthy. Her intelligence, courage, and moral compass make her an inspiring and relatable character. Her relationships with other characters, including her romantic involvement with Deputy Orville Braun, are portrayed with a level of depth and realism that adds to the novel's emotional richness.

"Mirror Lake" is a standout in the cozy mystery genre. It offers a unique blend of intrigue, charm, and a dash of fantasy. As someone who cherishes the power of stories to transport and transform, I found this book to be a delightful journey.

I wholeheartedly recommend "Mirror Lake" to anyone who loves a good mystery with a unique twist. It's a book that promises to take you on a journey filled with intrigue and enchantment.
