Merry Reads & Misadventures: Surviving December

by Jessica Jones

As the days inch closer to Christmas, the world seems to spin a little faster. There's a buzz in the air, a mixture of excitement and exhaustion, as we all try to wrap up our end-of-year tasks while diving headlong into the festive frenzy. For me, this season has been a whirlwind of emotions and events, some far less merry than others. Let's just say that being rear-ended at a stoplight isn't exactly the kind of jingle bell rock anyone hopes for. But as with all things, there's a silver lining or, in my case, a trio of them, nestled within the pages of some highly anticipated reads: "Wreck the Halls" by Tessa Bailey, "The Plight Before Christmas" by Kate Stewart, and "Enemies to Lovers" by Portia McIntosh.

First up, "Wreck the Halls" by Tessa Bailey. This book is my kind of holiday chaos. It's got all the trimmings of a classic Christmas conundrum, wrapped up with Bailey's signature wit and warmth. I'm expecting mistletoe mishaps, festive feuds, and maybe, just maybe, a Christmas miracle or two. There's something comforting about diving into a story where you know the halls might get wrecked, but the heart always ends up just where it needs to be.

Then there's "The Plight Before Christmas" by Kate Stewart. With a pun that good, I'm already half in love. Stewart promises a tale of holiday hilarity and romance, the perfect antidote to the less-than-silent nights of December. I'm ready to be whisked away to a world of yuletide yearnings and mistletoe magic, where the biggest worry is whether you'll be caught under the mistletoe with the wrong (or is it right?) person.

"Enemies to Lovers" by Portia McIntosh is next on my list. Sent to me by NetGalley, this book is a staple of the romance genre, and what better time to indulge in the delicious tension of adversaries turned admirers than over the holidays? There's something irresistible about watching two characters, armed to the teeth with barbed words and wary glances, slowly unwrap the layers of misunderstanding and grudges to reveal the sparkling attraction beneath. It's like the literary equivalent of unwrapping a particularly stubborn present to find the gift you didn't know you wanted.

But let's not forget the backdrop against which all this reading will take place. The recent car accident was a stark reminder of the unpredictability of life. It was more than just a bump in the road; it was a moment of clarity amidst the seasonal blur. It reminded me that while the holidays are a time for joy and togetherness, they can also bring unexpected challenges and setbacks. Yet, here I am, finding solace in the promise of stories that whisk me away from the collision of everyday life and into worlds of humor, heartache, and hope.

And then there's the real-life festive flurry to navigate. Running around for the holidays has taken on a new meaning this year, but with a week off work just around the corner, I'm looking forward to the calm after the storm. I'll be trading in the car keys for cookie cutters, spending time with my son as we bake our way through family recipes and maybe invent a few new traditions along the way. There's something about the smell of cookies in the oven and a good book in hand that makes even the coldest winter day feel a little warmer.

So, as I sit here, surrounded by the twinkle of Christmas lights and the ever-growing pile of books, I'm reminded that the holiday season is a tapestry of experiences. There are threads of joy, strands of stress, and the occasional knot that needs untangling. But through it all, there's the constant weave of stories—those we read, those we live, and those we share with others. Here's to a holiday season filled with all the right kinds of drama, the sweetness of shared moments, and, of course, plenty of page-turning. Happy holidays, and happy reading!
