Fourth Wing (The Empyrean #1)

by Rebecca Yarros

5 out of 5 stars

Hey there, fellow book lovers! I just wrapped up "Fourth Wing" by Rebecca Yarros, and let me tell you, it's an absolute gem! This book is a must-read, and here's why.

Our heroine, Violet Sorrengail, is a force to be reckoned with. Despite her small stature and fragile body due to a connective tissue disorder, she's got a spirit that's larger than life. She was supposed to live a quiet life in the Scribe Quadrant, but her mother, the commanding general, has other plans. Now, Violet is among the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But here's the thing: dragons don't bond to "fragile" humans. They incinerate them. And with fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, Violet's life is in constant danger. The stakes couldn't be higher, and every day is a fight for survival.

Then there's Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant. He's got a past connected to Violet, and all of their interactions are filled with tension, hate, and.. chemistry? Ah, yes. It's the kind of dynamic that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The world Yarros has created is intense and intriguing. It's a dog-eat-dog world where everyone is out for themselves. It's a place where power struggles and hidden secrets abound, and you're left guessing what's going to happen next.

What I love about "Fourth Wing" is how it stands out from other fantasy books. Yes, it has familiar elements, but it's also unique in its own right. Yarros' writing is top-notch, and she effortlessly draws you into the story and makes you fall in love with the characters.

But what really sets "Fourth Wing" apart is its representation of disability. Violet's connective tissue disorder puts her at risk, but she doesn't let that stop her. She's a fighter, and her strength and determination are truly inspiring.

The pacing of the book is spot-on. It's a fairly long novel, but there's never a dull moment. The fantasy world is more extensive than just having dragons (but my gosh, I LOVE the dragons) - there are powers, gods, wars, and other creatures. It's fascinating and exciting without being overwhelming.

So, if you're a fan of fantasy romance, or if you just love a good book, you need to check out "Fourth Wing". It's one of the best novels of 2023, and I can't wait for the next book in the series that will be out in November. Rebecca Yarros has truly outdone herself with this one.
