by Deanna Nese

4 out of 5 stars

I was fortunate to receive an eARC in exchange for an honest review from author Deanna Nese. Yellow Slicker will be available in hardcover and ebook format on February 7, 2023.

I want to begin by stating that I read this book in one sitting, and I quite literally did not leave my chair.

Our narrator, Duncan Knight, is the main character in this story - which spans just over 25 years. Driving home late one night in June of 1995, Duncan hears and feels a thud after seeing a flash of yellow. He quickly checks to see what it is, but when nothing and no one is easily found, he flees the scene.

The next day, Duncan finds that his already beat-up car has a new dent and discovers a piece of yellow fabric in the bumper. Time passes, no one comes forward, no one is reported missing, and no explanation is evident.

Over the next few years, we follow Duncan throughout his life and find that he is still plagued by the events of that fateful evening. He second-guesses himself, feels guilty, and tries to get over it, but still finds himself obsessed - he just wants to know, did he kill someone?

The years pass, and Duncan starts seeing signs and receiving messages indicating that someone knows what happened, which drives his paranoia.

At the beginning of this book, when we were getting to know Duncan, I felt so connected with him. I am in my late 20's now - but I thought that the younger version of Duncan had some similarities with the version of me that existed in my early 20s. I felt that the author did a great job making the character relatable at each stage of his life.

Deanna Nese takes us on a thrilling journey, and I was on the edge of my seat, unable to put this one down.

My only critique was that, in the end, I wish the overall 'wrap-up' was not so quickly explicated. I often find that psychological thrillers have great characters and tension building throughout the book - only to be tied up too conveniently or briskly in the end.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. Duncan Knight had excellent character development through the 234 pages, and I enjoyed seeing him through his journey. This book is a perfect match for those who enjoy psychological thrillers, the "I know what you did" trope, and paranoia.
