4 out of 5 stars

by Will Canduri, Translated by Andrea Labinger, Illustrated by Megan Herzart

I received an advanced reader's copy (ARC) of "Twisted Crows" in exchange for an honest review.

"Twisted Crows" by Will Canduri is a compelling anthology that delves deep into the intricacies of Spanish and Latin American culture. The book is a kaleidoscope of stories, each unique in its own way, ranging from historical fiction to futuristic narratives.

The writing style initially took some getting used to. Canduri employs a somewhat discordant approach that eventually reveals itself as a well-organized stream of consciousness. Once I acclimated to the author's unique voice, I found myself engrossed in the tales, each offering a different lens through which to view human experiences.

What stood out to me was the book's rich cultural motifs and elements of magical realism. While some stories felt like they could benefit from a bit more context, especially for readers unfamiliar with South American folklore, the majority were deeply engaging. The book seems to cater to a specific type of reader—one who enjoys stories that demand contemplation and intellectual engagement.

However, I did find that some stories shone brighter than others. While the book promises twists and turns, not all stories deliver on this front. But this is a minor quibble in an otherwise captivating collection.

In summary, "Twisted Crows" is a thought-provoking anthology that offers a rich tapestry of stories, each embedded in cultural, historical, and futuristic settings. It's a book that I believe will offer new insights upon a second or third reading, making it a valuable addition to any literary collection.
