Series Spotlight: Throne of Glass
Series by Sarah J. Maas
The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas is a sweeping epic fantasy that spans eight books. The series follows the story of Celaena Sardothien, a skilled assassin who is forced to compete in a deadly competition to become the King's Champion. From there, the story takes readers on a journey filled with magic, romance, betrayal, and heartache.
One of the strengths of the series is the way that Maas creates complex and compelling characters. Celaena is a fierce and flawed protagonist who grows and evolves throughout the series. She is joined by a cast of supporting characters who are equally well-drawn, each with their own motivations and secrets. Maas does an excellent job of showing the relationships between the characters, whether it's the close bonds of friendship or the complicated dynamics of romance.
Another strength of the series is Maas's world-building. The series takes place in a richly imagined world filled with magic, politics, and intrigue. From the soaring towers of the glass castle to the dusty streets of the desert city, every location is meticulously described and brought to life. The magic system is also well-developed, with different types of magic and magical creatures playing considerable roles in the story.
One of the hallmarks of the series is its emotional intensity. Maas isn't afraid to put her characters through the wringer, and readers will experience a full range of emotions while reading the series. The reader will experience themes of love, loss, betrayal, and sacrifice, while Maas explores the darker aspects of human nature.
According to Booktok, Bookstagram, and a few friends who read the series, there are different reading orders that are preferred. This argument mainly impacts when you read The Assassin's Blade, and how you choose to read Empire of Storms, and Tower of Dawn.
I chose to read them in this order, and I loved my experience:
Throne of Glass
Crown of Midnight
Heir of Fire
The Assassin's Blade
Queen of Shadows
Empire of Storms
Tower of Dawn
Kingdom of Ash
For more information regarding reading orders, whether you want to follow the publication order, or the more romantic order as I did, check out this post by T.L. Branson, which contains a downloadable PDF for reading order, as well as a chart if you choose to read Tower of Dawn and Empire of Storms in tandem.
Overall, the Throne of Glass series is a must-read for fans of epic fantasy. With its compelling characters, intricate world-building, and emotional intensity, it's a series that will stay with readers long after they turn the final page. While the series is lengthy, it's well worth the investment of time and energy. If you're looking for a series that will transport you to a fully-realized fantasy world filled with magic and adventure, then Throne of Glass is a perfect choice.
